Prime-site St Andrews hotel on market for £3.5 million

- GAVIN HARPER

Ahotel that could soon become flats on Tayside and Fife’s most expensive street is on the market for £3.5 million.

The Russell Hotel on The Scores in St Andrews recently hit the market with Christie & Co.

It is also the subject of plans to convert the 10-bedroom hotel into apartments.

Developer WT The Scores Ltd wants to convert the Russell Hotel on The Scores into four luxury flats.

Plans lodged with Fife Council also detail the demolition of the hotel’s extension on Murray Place.

If the demolition plans are given the go-ahead by the local authority, a further two new flats could be built.

A brochure advertising the hotel for sale states: “The property comprises a former residential townhouse converted to hotel use and extended to the rear over 50 years ago.

“It was acquired by the current owners in 1988, who have operated it since then.

“Since their acquisition, the property has had substantial internal refurbishment and some reconfiguration to create the look and feel found today.

“Due to its location within the popular tourist town of St Andrews, the target customer base is almost wholly leisure accommodation and food and beverage based, from tourist and golf visitors to the town and university students and employees.”

The owners did not respond to requests to speak to The Courier.

The Scores is Courier Country’s most exclusive location and Scotland’s sixth most expensive street, according to a list compiled by the Bank of Scotland.

Based on property sales between 2016 and 2021, house prices for the St Andrews location average £1.28m.

Tens of thousands of people will descend on the town this week for the 150th Open Championship.

The Scores is just a stone’s throw from the world-famous Old Course, the home of golf.

The Russell Hotel remains open and, in a social media post, said it is looking forward to welcoming guests during The Open.

The hotel is not the only one in St Andrews – or indeed on The Scores – to be undergoing major work.

Earlier this year, The Scores Hotel shut for 18 months for a major renovation.

Developers there are adding 15 rooms as part of a five-storey extension that will transform it into a fivestar establishment.
