Demands to tackle spate of burnt-out vehicles in Dundee

- BEN MACDONALD

Two burnt-out vehicles have been found in Dundee during a spate of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

A gutted car has been abandoned in Old Quarry Road, along with a van on Forties Road, just a mile away.

Police confirmed the car was stolen before being set alight. An accelerant canister was left beside it.

The manager of nearby Ballumbie Golf Club says anti-social behaviour in the area is becoming more frequent.

Alan Bange said: “Not only did we have the car fire but there was another similar incident nearby a few weeks ago.”

He added: “There has been more incidents happening in the area.

“If it isn’t car fires, it’s young people on scooters driving on the course and wrecking the greens.

“It’s becoming more difficult for our greenkeepers to maintain the standard of the course.”

Firefighters had to attend and extinguish the car after it was reported ablaze in the early hours of Wednesday.

On the same day, a burntout van was spotted beside a walkway on Forties Road.

Police are investigating the vehicle theft at Old Quarry Road, but say they have not received any reports about the van on Forties Road.

A police spokesperson said: “Our inquiries are ongoing.”

Last summer, furious members at Caird Park golf course in Dundee demanded more action be taken to deter vandals after dirt bikers left greens covered in tyre marks.

One golfer, who had played at the course for more than 60 years, said at the time: “This simply cannot go on.

“Something needs to be done and we are keen to see more CCTV at the course and at certain greens in particular, to try to put an end to this.”

“Golfers have had enough and we’re trying to find ways to stop the vandals damaging the course.”

Earlier this year, “highly offensive” graffiti was found at a number of courses at Carnoustie golf links.

Vandals spray-painted wooden signs around the three golf courses.
