Sevens victory for Howe men

- BY GARY HEATLY

Howe of Fife’s men won their own rugby sevens on Saturday at Duffus Park. It was already a celebratory weekend in Cupar because the club were celebrating 50 years since they first were victorious at their own event – and the current crop of players managed to do the same.

In front of a healthy crowd, they were 7-0 down at half-time in the final to Dundee Rugby but turned on the style after the break to win 21-7.

Fraser Allan captained the winning squad which also featured Will Howley, Jake Douglas, Andrew Harley, Logan Williams, Eden Cruikshank, Luke

Connah, Logan Parsons, Tom Logan and Stuart Dawson.

Select team the Pigbarians won the women’s event.

In Singapore, Montrose’s Shona Campbell helped Great Britain’s women finish eighth in the SVNS world series event.

It means they are eighth in the overall standings and will be at the Grand Final event in Madrid later this month.

In XVs rugby, Panmure’s long season came to an end in the Caledonia One playoffs with a 68-5 defeat in Elgin to Moray.

It means the Broughty Ferry men finish fifth in Caledonia One with Moray crowned the champions.

There was better news for former Dundee player Sam Cardosi who put in an excellent performance at No 8 as Currie Chieftains went to the Borders and defeated Hawick 26-24 in a cracking Premiership final at Mansfield Park.

● Dundee have announced Craig Shearer as the newest addition to their coaching team for the 2024-25 season.

Joining forces with Ross Hutton, Shearer will serve as the assistant coach to the second team, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to the role.

During a long and varied playing career, Shearer captained the Dundee second team a few years ago, so his experience will be invaluable.
