Paris hopeful Reekie made Doha mistakes

-

Scots athlete Jemma Reekie believes her best form is still ahead after running reigning world champion Mary Moraa close at last night’s Diamond League leg in Doha.

The 27-year-old came second to the Kenyan in the women’s 800 metres in 1:58.42. It was Reekie’s first outing since taking silver at March’s World Indoors in Glasgow.

But it is all baby steps, she underlined, towards the big prize of the Olympics in Paris this summer.

She said: “It was a good performance; I made a few mistakes. I held my position in the last 300 metres. It is a lesson and I will learn from this mistake but I’m pleased overall.

“The Olympics are a long way off. I’m still in heavy training. This was definitely sharpening up. It was great. I’m feeling confident. But there’s a long way to go.”

Molly Caudrey won the women’s pole vault with a clearance of 4.73m to pick up where she left off with her world indoor gold.

In the men’s 200m Kenneth Bednarek ran a personal best and worldleading time.

The Tokyo Olympic Games silver medallist eased to the finish line in a time of 19.67 seconds

Courtney Lindsey was second and Kyree King came third to complete an all-american podium.

British sprinter Daryll Neita claimed her second Diamond League meeting victory in succession after winning the 100 metres.

Neita moved from third to first in the closing stages to clock a time of 10.98 seconds.

The fourth Diamond League meeting of the 2024 season will be in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday May 19.
