Anniversary win and solar storm spotting
COUPLE WENT TO BED UNAWARE THEY WERE £145,000 RICHER
A Fife couple have told how they went to bed after celebrating their anniversary – not knowing they were £145,000 richer.
George Muir and partner Sandra Mccormack were out celebrating their 28th anniversary when the Euromillions draw was made on May 3.
The pair did not check their ticket until the next morning – when they realised they had scooped £145,757.50.
The couple have now celebrated their win overlooking the Forth bridges, pictured above.
George, 60, who works for a hydrogen renewable energy company, bought his Euromillions ticket online a few hours before the draw. He and Sandra, 64, plan on buying a new car, a Rolex watch and a holiday with the winnings.
The couple also plan on retiring early, though not immediately.
GIRL, 12, BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER CANCER TREATMENT
A 12-year-old girl has returned to school in Perth after 85 weeks of treatment for a brain tumour.
Orla Blues has received chemotherapy at Ninewells Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh since being diagnosed with a brain tumour in summer 2022.
She is now at the end of her treatment and well enough to return parttime to Craigclowan School, whose head teacher Liz Henderson has labelled her “remarkable”. Orla’s father George says support from the school and her fellow pupils have proved to be invaluable in her rehabilitation. Athough she missed a lot of school, Orla was certainly not forgotten by classmates in Form 8.
They raised money for Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia (TCCL), which provides activities and support to families with a child receiving cancer treatment.
GENERAL ELECTION CALLED BY SUNAK
Rishi Sunak has fired the starting gun for a July 4 general election, saying Sir Keir Starmer could not be trusted to lead the country through “uncertain” times.
The prime minister made the economy and combating global security threats facing the UK the key elements of his pitch to the nation.
In response, Labour leader Sir Keir told voters: “Together we can stop the chaos, we can turn the page, we can start to rebuild Britain.”
A sodden Mr Sunak had to battle both the rain and the sounds of New Labour anthem Things Can Only Get Better blasted from beyond the Downing Street gates, as he said he would “fight for every vote” to try to overturn a 20-point opinion poll deficit.
This drew criticism from Scottish politicians due to it falling in the first week of the school holidays, disrupting holiday plans and causing a rush for postal votes.
‘SINGING WAITRESS’ PERFORMS ON HER 100TH BIRTHDAY
Dundee’s “singing waitress” celebrated her 100th birthday by belting out her favourite song on the karaoke.
Helen Stewart wore a tiara as she entertained party guests with her rendition of Sandie Shaw’s Eurovision classic Puppet On A String.
The sprightly centenarian’s love of music has seen her sing her way through life.
She has been known to entertain staff in Dundee city centre as she does her shopping. A previous Leng Medal winner, Helen has worked in silver service in hotels and restaurants. For her birthday, she received a karaoke machine.
Helen, who lives independently in the city, was well known during her working days, finishing up at the T-bone Steakhouse in Dundee’s Union Street. She had two children, daughter Joyce and late son Gordon.
SPACE WEATHER SATELLITE TO BE BUILT IN THE UK
A satellite that will provide an early warning system for potentially dangerous space weather will be built in the UK.
Airbus, which has its UK headquarters in Bristol, has been selected by the European Space Agency to design and build the space weather forecasting satellite, Vigil.
The spacecraft will give vital extra warning about incoming solar storms and coronal mass ejections which can potentially disrupt satellites in orbit and electronic and power distribution systems on Earth.
Data from Vigil could provide notice of four to five days of solar winds streaming toward Earth.
