Renowned artist helps class brush up on their skills
ONE OF SCOTLAND’S most famous artists has returned to Angus to show his support for a county institution.
John Byrne, creator of 80s TV series Tutti Frutti and highly regarded playwright and artist, gave local painters a unique treat yesterday after sitting as the subject on day one of a week-long portrait master class at Hospitalfield, Arbroath.
Hosting the event is award-winning artist Jenni- fer McRae, who is currently holding a residency at the facility and was delighted to have John as the subject for Monday’s class.
Ms McRae said: “It was a really nice atmosphere and everyone got really engaged with the sitter (John).
“I was slightly apprehensive to begin with, as I’ve admired his work since I was an art student, but John is the kind of person that puts everyone at ease.”
Mr Byrne first came to Hospitalfield in the early 1960s after being selected for a residency during his second year at Glasgow School of Art.
He was also named as the trust’s honorary patron last year and told The Courier he has fond memories of the building.
“I hadn’t been back here since last year but I have very pleasant memories of it,” said John.
“I think Hospitalfields offers a great opportunity and it’s a great facility. It’s great to see these places being available to people from every walk of life.
“I do a lot of self-portraits so it’s very interesting to see other people’s views.”
Coordinator of the event, Rebecca Westguard said: “We are absolutely delighted that John has come back. For him to show support like this is just fantastic and shows that we are going in the right direction.”
