A job well done for part-timers

- IAN ROACHE

IN SPORT in general and football in particular, it’s meant to be all about winning. No time for losers, they argue, in the cut-throat business of points gathering in this game.

However, what Montrose showed against Rangers on Saturday was that you can come out of a defeat with tremendous credit and genuine hope for an exciting remainder of the season.

They were the width of the woodwork away from getting a draw against the Glasgow giants — not once but twice — and their overall play was excellent.

Like their Angus neighbours Arbroath before them, they had a genuine hard-luck story to tell following a match against one of the Old Firm.

For the Lichties it was what appeared to be a good goal chalked off in the Scottish Cup against Celtic at Gayfield last midweek.

For the Gable Endies it was a lack of luck that would have seen just one of their late chances go in rather than rebound to safety.

For if either Garry Wood’s shot or Scott Johnston’s strike had hit the net, the clever money would have been on a final score of Montrose 3, Rangers 3.

The Gable Endies’ play was as bright and breezy as the weather on Saturday. Therefore, every one of those Montrose part-timers should have a spring in their step as they report to their work this morning, knowing it was a job well done.
