Auchmore – seat of the Clan MacNab

-

FRA SER BROWN of Blairgowrie emails: “I read the item from Terry Wood regarding the castle he worked at in Killin in 1952. “I think the castle was called A uchmore House and nearby there was Kinnell House which was the seat of the Clan MacNab which have long associations with Killin.

The Glen Orchy Campbells took over the MacNab lands and the Marquis of Breadalbane built A uchmore House in 1872. During the Second World War it became a Polish military hospital.

“It became the local headquarters of the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board when the Breadalbane hydro scheme was being constructed in the 1950s. It was demolished in the 1960s because it was full of dry rot.”

“A uchmore House was never a castle,” says May McGregor. “The estate was purchased by the chief of MacNab from the Earl of Breadalbane and his family had it for several years before selling it on. A bungalow was built on the site for MacNab’s widow and his nephew and family took over Kinnell House.

“Some information on its history can be found on the internet reA uchmore House. Incidentally, one of the subsequent owners was A ndy Robbins.

“He and his wife were the owners of Hercules the bear.”
