ST JOHNSTONE striker Chris Kane’s missed penalty for Dumbarton against Alloa in the Scottish Cup at the weekend denied him the chance of emulating a club record that has stood since 1890.

Kane had scored in his first five matches for the Sons and, if he had found the net from the penalty spot against theWasps, he would have matched the feat of John Taylor, who scored in his first six games when the Scottish Football League started nearly 124 years ago.

Kane had scored against Morton, Cowdenbeath, Alloa, Hamilton and Livingston. However, Taylor’s record remains after the 19-year-old drew a blank at Recreation Park.

Club historian Jim McAllister said: “Not since the f irst ever season of organised league football in 1890/91 had a Dumbarton player scored in his first six consecutive matches when JohnTaylor managed it.”

Kane can still be a record breaker at Dumbarton, though, as McAllister explained: “John does not have the record for scoring in back to back matches for a player not playing for the first time.

“That was set back in the 1971/72 season when KennyWilson scored in 12 games in a row.

“We have 13 league games and at least one Scottish Cup tie left to play so perhaps he can beat Kenny’s record.”

East Fife winger Scott McBride is facing a longer than expected break on the sidelines after his pelvic injury failed to respond to treatment.

The wideman has been out of action since the start of the year and has now been sent for a scan.

Boss Gary Naysmith said: “The problem is more troublesome than we had first feared.”
