Shoplifter left supermarket with trolley piled high

-

A BRAZEN shoplifter piled more than £400 worth of groceries into a shopping trolley before walking out without paying, Dundee Sheriff Court heard yesterday.

Edith Reid, 17, pleaded guilty to stealing the items, which included steaks, from the Sainsbury’s store on Baldovie Road, Dundee on December 12.

Staff watched Reid fill a trolley with goods worth a total of £406.13.

Mohammed Sadiq, prosecuting, said: “Staff at Sainsbury’s observed the accused walking into the store, filling a trolley with shopping including meat and groceries and then leaving the locus without paying. They pursued her and the police were called.”

Solicitor advocate Jim Laverty said that Reid’s family was going through a difficult period at the time of the theft.

He said: “She lives with her parents. She has been home-schooled and hopes to go to college. The family were in financial difficulty at the time of the incident.

“She thought she would be helping.

“She has had the trauma of coming here. This was a one-off incident because of a number of difficulties at the time.”

Reid, of Kestrel Way in Perth, had sentence deferred for three months for good behaviour.
