Grove poised for another title
THE SEA SON reaches its climax at Glasgow Green tomorrow, with Grove Menzieshill primed to pick up their eighth national league title on the bounce, writes our women’s hockey correspondent.
Their opposition remains in doubt until the final whistle blows in today’s Edinburgh University v MCCWestern match, when they lock horns for the second time in a week.
MCCW are looked upon as Grove’s traditional arch rivals but the acquisition of Sam Judge as player/coach changed the student dynamic as they came within a whisker of upstaging the Glasgow heavyweights 12 months ago.
A repeat of last Saturday’s narrow victory would be a huge leap on the students’ learning curve and would also guarantee them a place in next year’s European club competitions but wrestling the title from a Grove squad peppered with internationalists is probably a step too far
Western have their sights trained on making it through to the final and they will be banking on their core strength of current Scotland players to provide them with the desired result.
Meanwhile,
the relegation battles continue in Glasgow and Forthbank.
Glynhill Kelburne are the only side in the comfort zone for elite status next season.
A s for the remaining seven contenders, it’s all to play for before the curtain falls tomorrow night.
Locally the focus is on the Midland KnockOut Cup and Plate com.petitions, with the big match billing going to the match-up between cup holders Kinross and former champions Madras FP.
Kinross have tucked away the league championship and are looking to make it another district double.
