Enjoyed a cup of tea and a “baggie”

-

“I SAW the photograph of the Den o’ Mains in Dundee in a recent Craigie Column, writes Dorothy Vannet of Carnoustie, “and then read all the stories about it being a popular picnic spot.

“My late father, George P. Grant, who was a boxing promoter and ‘bookie’ in Dundee, organised a picnic there every year from the 1920s to the 1950s. As another reader has mentioned, it was known as ‘Geordie’s Picnic’.

“About 200 children attended, mostly from the east end of Dundee around the Princes Street area.

“My father organised races and I think that the winner received 6d in old money and the second and third place got 3d each.

“The children then sat in circles on the grass and were given cups of tea and a ‘baggie’ which contained a sausage roll, a bun and a cake.

“Later, buses came and took everyone to the Broadway Cinema in Arthurstone Terrace to watch cowboy films. When it was all over, the children got a stick of Blackpool rock. Happy days!”
