AN UNLOOKED-FOR danger from smokeless fuel has broken out in some Dundee west end tenement houses. Joists under the hearths have smouldered and burst into flames. The intense heat from the smokeless fuel – burned in grates and homes not primarily designed to use it – is blamed for the outbreaks. Firemen have been called to deal with several outbreaks. Two houses at 13 Blackness Avenue were affected, while two more outbreaks developed in Lytton Street and three more in Seymour Street. In some homes the fireplaces had to be pulled out.
