ON BOARD FOR COMPETITION

MOUNTAIN BOARDERS from across the country will descend on Perth next month.

On June 7 St Magdalene’s Hill will play host to a competition organised by the All-Terrain Board Association UK (ATBA-UK).

The Fair City date is round two in the organisation’s Mountain Board Series and is the only part of the tournament to be held on Scottish soil.

Downhill mountain boarding is popular in the Alps and America, but is relatively unknown in the UK.

Derived from snowboarding, competitors hurtle down hillsides strapped to a rigid board on giant all-terrain wheels.

The Perth competition will bring together extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the country to race against the clock on a demanding track.

This event is free for spectators and there will be limited parking available.

In the early 1990s individuals in the UK, America and Australia started to develop boards that could be ridden off-road in the absence of snow independently of each other — and mountain boarding was born.

ATBA-UK, the national governing body for the sport in Britain, was formed in 1997.

The remaining four events in the Mountain Board Series will take place in Yorkshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Herefordshire between now andAugust 17.
