Blackburn keen to offload former United cup final hero

- By Neil Robertson

DAVID GOODWILLIE’S agent has confirmed he plans to hold talks with the former Dundee United player over his future at Blackburn Rovers.

Ewood Park boss Gary Bowyer is determined to cut his wage bill with “Goodie” deemed as being surplus to requirements along with five others, including Jordan Slew, who was on loan this season at Ross County.

Big things were expected of Goodwillie when he left Tannadice for Rovers in a £2.8 million deal in 2011.

However, the Tangerines’ Scottish Cup-winning hero struggled to make an impact, scoring only five goals and making just 10 starts for Rovers.

The 25-year-old had a loan spell at Crystal Palace during the 2012/13 season and was willing to f ight for his place at Rovers last summer, only to go out on loan again back to Dundee United.

He scored six times in his second spell with the club but Tannadice boss Jackie McNamara decided against extending his deal and he went back down south in January.

GOODWILLIE ENDED the season on loan again at Blackpool.

Now, he has been t r a n s f e r- l i s t e d by Rovers despite having a year left on his contract.

His agent, former St Mirren star Ricky Gillies, admitted he expects the striker to be playing for another club next season.

He said: “That’s the natural progression now. David’s on holiday at the moment, I’ve not spoken to him yet.

“Obviously t hings haven’t panned out the way he had hoped at Blackburn.

“I need to speak to him and we need to see where we go from here.”

Meanwhile, another player who spent time on loan at Tannadice last season, Newcastle United defender Curtis Good, has been dealt a huge blow after he was ruled out of theWorld Cup with Australia.

The player injured his hip wh i l e on international duty with the Socceroos against Ecuador in March.

He was hopeful that t he problem would have cleared in time for him to travel to Brazil.

However, reports from Australia suggest that he may need surgery to cure the injury and he will not make the World Cup.
