The city is levelled to the ground; its fine cathedral has only the bare walls left and the streets were littered with the bodies of men and horses, broken wagons and motor cars; it was a city of the dead.”

The Royal Mail announced plans for 2p increases in the price of first and second class stamps yesterday. The rises will come into effect in September. Current prices are 20p for first class and 15p for second. A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Like every other business, we need extra revenue to pay for cost increases, which in our case includes a record investment to further boost service reliability for our customers. The price rises are in line with the rate of inflation, running at just below 10%.”

Aiden Headridge wrote to his beloved club putting himself forward for the Parkhead hotseat, following the departure of Neil Lennon. Neither Aiden, nor his mother Lynne, had expected Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell to send a reply to his application, informing the wouldbe boss that the situation had been filled. “We have appointed Ronny Deila as the new football manager,” the letter stated.
