Cutting from The Courier shows the progress made

-

A dip into the archives of The Courier, above, makes clear how far Scotland’s female police officers have come in less than a century.

The first policewomen were appointed in Scotland during the First World War as the force began losing numbers to the army.

It was only by 1968 that women could remain in their post after marrying.

A pioneering woman in the force was Jean Thomas who joined Dundee City Police during the First World War.

But in 1922, the Chief Constable of Dundee City had to publicly deny that he had a woman working as a constable, even though he did.

At a meeting of the Town Council’s Police Committee, reported on May 30 1922, a deputation of women called for more female representation on the force.
