Addiction recovery support

Friends and family of people with addiction problems are being offered the opportunity to take part in a Smart Recovery Mutual Aid programme.

Smart Recovery is a scientificbased approach for people who are seeking recovery from addictive substances, such as alcohol and drugs.

It includes a network of selfhelp/mutual aid meetings and a “community of recovery”, which can be accessed online and at the meetings.

Perth and Kinross Alcohol and Drug Partnership has been involved in the development of Smart Recovery. The team found that one of the main groups of people in need of help and support was the family and friends of people who were struggling with addiction.

The drop-in groups will meet every Friday, from 10am to noon, at CAIR Scotland, 80 Princess Street, Perth.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: “Smart Recovery provides support and tools for people who are affected by the addictive behaviour of someone close to them.

“The important role they play in helping the people they care about recover can’t be overestimated.

“The programme aims to help participants develop more effective coping strategies and find a greater sense of fulfilment in their own lives.”

An open day will be held in Perth on Friday from noon to 2pm. For further information telephone 01738 451594.
