University to honour illustriou­s figures

Graduands will also collect their awards

Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith are among those to be awarded honorary degrees by the university.

Eleven distinguis­hed individual­s will be honoured during the university’s summer graduation ceremonies to be held from today until Friday at the Younger Hall.

They are Professor Robert Keohane, professor of public and internatio­nal affairs at Princeton University; and Professor Nannerl Keohane, political philosophe­r, who will be honoured today.

Tomorrow, Professor Herbert Roesky of University of Göttingen; and Dr Cerf will appear and it will be the turn of artist Anselm Kiefer; Dr Nicholas Penny, the director of the National Gallery, London; and Dr Alice-Mary Talbot, director Emerita of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington DC.

The final batch of honorary degrees, on Friday, will go to Sir John Skehel, vice-president and biological secretary of the Royal Society; Professor Robert Webster of St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Tennessee; Professor Jean Lave of University of California, Berkeley; and Professor McCall Smith.
