Ruth’s dream of a ‘white wedding’

Scottish Tory leader would not want to be Prime Minister, which is one of the ‘loneliest jobs in the world’

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has opened her heart about early dreams of a “big white wedding” and her struggle coming to terms with her sexuality.

She said she didn’t want to be gay because of her Christian faith.

Speaking to the BBC she said: “I thought I was destined for the big white wedding and the chap on my arm and all the rest of it, and then it wasn’t to be.

“I didn’t come out until my mid-20s. I’d known for a few years before that.”

She continued: “The biggest issue for me actually was the issues with my faith.

“To read Paul’s Letter to various churches around the globe, talking about ‘homosexual offenders’ and talking about idolaters and adulterers and thieves being ranked together, was very difficult.

“I didn’t want to be gay – I’m not sure how many people do and it’s been amazing the difference even in my lifetime how things have changed.

“But there comes a point at which you make a decision, either that you’re going to live a lie for the rest of your life or you’re going to trust yourself. “That’s what I had to do.” Ms Davidson said she was glad to take on the challenge of leading the Scottish Conservatives but that “there have been the dark nights of the soul” and she would not want to be Prime Minister.

She said: “I am incredibly lucky in that I get to regularly see behind the door of number 10 and it looks like the loneliest job in the world, second only probably to being the President of the United States.

“Running a G7 country is not for faint hearted. I don’t think I’m up to it.”

Ms Davidson also spoke of how she almost died when she was five after being hit by a lorry on the road where she lived.

As a result of her scars, she said she had never had a “great body image”.

“It was pretty serious. I was in hospital for a long time.

“My parents were told that there was a pretty strong chance that I wouldn’t live, and if I did I wouldn’t have any legs.

Ms Davidson, who later broke her back in three places while in the TA, said she had had “survivor guilt” after a boy at her school was knocked down on the same bit of road and later took his life.

She said if she had to describe herself as a cartoon character, it would be Scooby Doo’s nephew, Scrappy Doo.

“I am a kind of ‘let me at ‘em uncle Scooby, give us another swing’ type person,” she said.
