Bony off the mark as he looks for City to win group

-

Wilfried Bony is happy to be on the Champions League scoresheet – but his prime target is ensuring Manchester City power through as group winners.

Bony was on target as City secured their place in the knock-out stage of the competition with two games to spare with a brilliant 3-1 win at Sevilla.

The goal was the 26-year-old’s first in the competition that attracted him to City and was much welcomed after recent criticism from fans.

But Bony is not overly concerned about his own situation and just wants to make sure City, having moved top of Group D, now go on to cement that position.

The Ivory Coast striker said: “It is good for me to score and for the team to win. That is why I am here. I am just working hard, trying to score the chances I get and to win the game.

“So we are first in the table now. We just have to continue that and try to continue the winning run for the next round.”

Meanwhile Ander Herrera still regards Wayne Rooney as one of the best players on the planet despite his indifferent form this season.

Rooney’s 79th-minute header gave United a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday and moved him up to second alongside Denis Law in the club’s all-time scoring charts.

Spanish midfielder Herrera, though, has defended the 30-yearold United and England captain.

“He is one of the best players in the world,” he said.

“I try to not read (what the critics say) too much. I try to create my own opinion and my opinion is clear – Wayne Rooney is one of the best. He is one of the stars.”
