Hearts’ role tempts Daly to leave Rovers

RAITH: Striker leaving Stark’s Park in January to take up coaching post at Tynecastle

Raith Rovers have received a big blow with the news that Jon Daly will be leaving the club when his contract ends in January to become the under-20s coach at Hearts.

The 32-year-old former Dundee United and Rangers striker has become a key player for Ray McKinnon’s side since joining the club at the end of August.

The big Irishman opted to go to Raith despite late interest from Championship rivals Hibs, signing a short-term deal.

McKinnon had hoped funds could be found to extend Daly’s stay but instead, the player will now head to Tynecastle to begin his coaching career.

In a statement, Raith said: “Heart of Midlothian FC has agreed terms with our striker Jon Daly, for him to become their new U20s coach upon expiration of his Stark’s Park playing contract in January.

“This is obviously very disappointing news for the Stark’s Park faithful, but the club was not in a position to compete with the terms offered by the Premiership outfit and in any event we would not wish to stand in the way of a great chance for Jon to move into coaching with a club of Hearts’ structure.

“Jon will leave in January with our best wishes for the future.”

Hearts’ director of football Craig Levein said: “I’m delighted that Jon has agreed to join the club in January and take up the post of U20s coach.

“Jon is somebody that both myself and Robbie (manager Neilson) know from our respective times at Dundee United and it’s an exciting appointment.

“We believe he has all the attributes to develop into a great coach and we look forward to welcoming him in January.”
