McNamara delighted to take York post

-

Former Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara has been announced as the new manager of York City, writes Neil Robertson.

The 42-year-old who parted company with the Tangerines last month, emerged as a leading contender to take over from Russ Wilcox in the Bootham Crescent hot seat at the weekend.

McNamara, who has also managed Partick Thistle, will take charge of a York side sitting third bottom of League Two and without a win in their last five games.

Simon Donnelly, who was McNamara’s assistant at the Jags and United, will once again be his No 2 at York.

McNamara will lead the Minstermen for the first time on Saturday in the FA Cup first round tie at Accrington Stanley.

After his unveiling at Bootham Crescent, McNamara said: “I am delighted to be back in.

“It is a great challenge and a fresh start for me down in England.

“I was fortunate to have played in England as a player, as was Simon, so we know what it’s about.

“Also, you look at what Derek Adams has achieved at Plymouth Argyle (they lead League Two) after leaving Ross County and see that Scots managers can do well.

“I want to take the club forward like Derek has done at Plymouth.

“I was open-minded coming down here but I am looking forward to it.

“I think there are two sides to this going forward.

“We want to kick on up the league and there is a big FA Cup tie on Sunday against Accrington Stanley.

“It’s a tough start but one I will look forward to.

“I am moving down to York and it is a lovely part of the world.”
