A century-old drinking fountain has been restored to its former glory after almost being destroyed by trees.

The Cragieknowes fountain was installed in Edwardian times by those involved in the Temperance Movement in a bid to keep men from the pubs while on long Sunday walks.

However in recent years it had collapsed as tree roots worked their way into the stonework.

The South Perth Green Spaces Group set about raising funds to help save it for the people of the Fair City and recently artist and stonemason David Wilson was brought in to bring the fountain back to life.

A spokeswoman for the group said: “When members noticed that tree root growth had caused the old drinking fountain to collapse they decided to do something about it.

“Funds were sought to allow the fountain’s restoration by local artist and stonemason David Wilson.

“This drinking fountain, on Craigieknowes Road, is one of a number of stone fountains installed on walking routes in Perth in the Edwardian period more than a hundred years ago.

“Others are found on Edinburgh Road and Dundee Road, and together they represent important historical and cultural features telling the story of the areas’ relationship with Perth city.”

Gary Boatman, chairman of the group, added: “We are grateful to all those who provided funding and support for the refurbishment – Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, Perth and Kinross Community Environment Challenge Fund, Perth and Kinross Council and local business Logs ’n’ Stuff.

“The group is delighted that this historic feature has now been restored for current and future Perth residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Councillor Willie Wilson welcomed the restoration.

He said: “It’s great news to see that this project has come to fruition.

“The South Perth Green Spaces Group has done a remarkable job in initiating and pursing the project.

“We have had a lot of support from officers at Perth and Kinross Council and I very much hope that the public will appreciate the fountain being restored.”
