Raonic gains revenge over Federer with Brisbane win
Milos Raonic exacted revenge on Roger Federer by beating the Swiss in straight sets to win the Brisbane International.
Federer beat Raonic to earn his 1,000th career win and lift the trophy 12 months ago, but yesterday the world No 14 came out on top thanks to a 6-4 6-4 victory in Australia.
“It feels great,” Raonic told the ATP’s website after clinching his eighth tour title.
“It feels great considering how the past nine months have been. It adds asortofcherryontoptoallthat.(The win) does great things.
“For myself it signifies within the team how concrete and good the work we’re doing is.
“At the same time, with the difficulties I’ve had last year, it’s maybeagoodwayformetoshowthe other guys I will face going into Melbourne that I’ve got my stuff back together.”
Meanwhile, Aljaz Bedene missed out on a place in the final of the Chennai Open after losing his semi-final in three sets to Croatia’s Borna Coric.
The Slovenian-born Briton went down 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 to the eighth seed.
Bedene, whose only appearance inanATPTourfinalwasinChennai last year, broke three times compared to his opponent’s four in a match featuring 24 break points.
Coric lost yesterday’s final to world No 4 Stan Wawrinka 6-3 7-5 in just 86 minutes as the Swiss ace claimed his third successive title.
Nick Kyrgios secured the Hopman Cup for Australia Green by beating Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-36-4togivehisteama2-0victory over Ukraine in Perth.
