The first flight from Dundee Airport to Amsterdam will take off on May 23.

Airline Flybe is now selling tickets for flights between Tayside and the capital of the Netherlands online.

They are the first ever scheduled international flights from the airport.

Previous flights to international destinations such as Majorca had all been charter flights.

The first flight from Dundee to Amsterdam departs at 12.25pm on May 23. The cheapest available ticket for the two-hour flight is just £17.88.

However, anyone hoping to make a day trip to the Netherlands will be disappointed.

Flights from Schiphol Airport to Dundee take off at 10.50am, so an overnight stay in Amsterdam will be a necessity.

The cheapest flight from Amsterdam to Dundee will cost around £26.

UK Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill said: “It is fantastic to see Flybe launch this new service between Dundee and Amsterdam, giving the Scottish city its first international route.

“Our smaller airports are vital engines for local economies, connecting the UK and overseas destinations and opening up opportunities. That is why the UK Government is backing new regional air routes with £7m of funding to drive investment and boost growth across the country.”

Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s chief revenue officer, said: “We are pleased to be the first airline to provide Dundee travellers with this international air link.

“It is a another example of our ongoing commitment to strengthening our position as the airline of choice for customers who have a need for travel but live in areas not well served by other airlines.”

Inglis Lyon, managing director of airport operator HIAL, said: “We are delighted that Flybe’s new Dundee to Amsterdam route is now on sale. This has been a priority target for the airport for some time and we are grateful to our partners, the city council and Transport Scotland, for their support, and to Flybe for showing confidence in Dundee.”

Flights will operate six days a week.
