New air route widely praised
Business leaders, politicians and celebrities have all welcomed the launch of the Flybe route.
Lorraine Kelly said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for business and tourism and will make a big difference to travellers in and around Tayside.
“It’s especially important with the V&A and waterfront development on the horizon.”
Chris van der Kuyl, founder of 4J Studios, said: “I’m delighted to hear that Dundee’ s first connection to a global hub airport is to go ahead. A direct flight to Amsterdam will be a game-changer for the city and sends a strong message that Dundee is open for business worldwide.”
Sir Pete Downes, Dundee University principal and vicechancellor, said: “The university is a global institution, with students and staff coming here from over 140 countries and regular visitors from all over the world.
“The new route to Amsterdam, which is a great hub for onward international travel, is a tremendous boost to our international ambitions.”
Andy Lothian, chief executive of training company Insights, said: “This exciting news connects Dundee to the world.
“Our Dutch colleagues have already asked us to arrange bicycles at Dundee Airport so they can cycle to our head office in the technology park.”
A spokesperson for the One City, Many Discoveries campaign said: “It’s a timely and positive announcement ahead of next month’s Dundee and Angus Tourism Conference.”
Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland, said: “Air routes form an important part of the visitor economy and this service from Schiphol will bring the potential for growth in our European market.”
