More than 30,000 outside labour market
Nearly a third of working age adults in Dundee are not working – but only a quarter of those want a job.
There are 30,100 people in the city who are outside the labour market, which amounts to 31% of its population.
The national average for economic inactivity is 22.2% in Scotland and 22.3% in Britain.
The figures for the city are likely to be skewed by its strong student presence, with top class universities Dundee and Abertay home to about 23,000 students alone.
The most common reason for being economically inactive is for studying, followed by looking after families and long-term sickness.
Of those who are economically active in Dundee, 25% would like to be employed while 75% are content as they are.
Some 3% of the city’s residents are claiming Jo b s e e k e r ’ s Allowance, compared with 2% across Scotland.
