A big day for leaplings.

-

When Fiona Henderson blows out the candles on her cake today she can claim to have the same age as her daughters.

The nursery nurse will be 48, but it will be her 12th actual birthday, six months after Emma and Amy turned 12.

Fiona, who works in the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, started a trend for unusual birthdays in her family when she was born on February 29 1968.

Although Emma and Amy are twins, they were born on different days in August.

Emma was born just a few minutes before midnight and her sister followed four minutes after midnight.

Fiona, of Methilhill, said: “My husband Henry is the only one in the house with a normal birthday.”

Her leap year age of 12 is causing much hilarity for Emma and Amy who are pupils at Buckhaven High School.

Fiona said: “They think it’s cool because they are going to be older than me by the time August comes.”

Alana Henderson of Markinch had a similar experience when she celebrated her first real birthday the year her baby sister turned one.

The eight-year-old – turning two today – was the first baby born on February 29 2008 in Forth Park Hospital, Kirkcaldy, entering the world seven minutes after midnight.

Mum Debbie said: “She is quite pleased to have a special birthday and explains to people that she doesn’t have a real birthday every year.”

Alana, a pupil at Markinch Primary School, had a pamper party with friends yesterday and will celebrate again with family today.

Debbie said: “We make a bigger deal of it when it’s her real birthday.”
