Grove’s derby defeat sees Edinburgh go back on top
MJV Dundee Wanderers’ stunning 3-1 victory over Grove Menzieshill left the door ajar for defending champions Edinburgh University to leapfrog their rivals and reclaim pole position in the premier league.
The main protagonists are still neck and neck on the 40 point mark, but it’s the high-scoring students who hold the ace card with a 28-goal differential going into the final three matches.
Teenage star Charlotte Watson celebrated her recent elevation to Scotland’s senior squad with an eyecatching reverse strike early in the first half.
Amanda Maxwell gave Wanderers a further cushion after the break and a Vikki Bunce tap-in sealed an excellent win before Grove replied with a late Sarah Jamieson consolation.
Wanderers, who are making a bold bid to finish third, were also in good form on Saturday when they ran up a 5-1 result over Kelburne.
Bunce netted a hattrick with Watson and Jess Ross joining her on the scoresheet while Imogen Davies hit back for the Paisley squad.
MCC Western are two points adrift of Wanderers with a game more played.
While St Andrews and Stirling universities are sitting safe in mid-table in division 2 it’s their Dundee counterparts who are setting the heather on fire in Championship A and the purple patch continued with an 8-2 drubbing of Kinross.
While the Midland championship is almost certainly assured for Dundee University IIs, Perthshire II’s 3-2 win over St Andrews IV wrapped up the second-division silverware and guaranteed a move upstairs for next season.
