‘Dem’ School staff

-

“Having recently been to the University Tower foyer to see the new exhibition of the history of the Dundee College of Education,” emails Avon Bartlett (nee Brown), “it brought back many memories – first of all of being trained in the building in Park Place and then of teaching in the newly-opened Demonstration School.

“This was opened in August 1966. The nursery class, which was in the old building, expanded to two classes attached to the infant department which took up one wing of the new building.

“On seeing a photograph of the staff of Barnhill School in the column, I was prompted to send in a picture taken of the ‘Dem’ School staff on the occasion of the assistant head teacher leaving ( see picture on right).

“His name was Douglas Soutar and, as he was a Celtic supporter, there was a strong white and green theme to the decorations. In the centre just under Doug is Miss Isobel McHaffie, our infant mistress and John Gunning, the head master.

“I hope the photograph brings back happy memories for past pupils.”
