FAMILY FEEDS: M&S Cafe, Kirkcaldy

-

What is it? Busy cafe on the mezzanine level of M&S in Kirkcaldy High Street.

First impressions? Crowded! The cafe is quite small, tucked away in a quiet corner behind menswear, and didn’t seem quite big enough for the number of people frequenting it – we were there after 2pm so the lunchtime rush must have been worse!

What did you have? Mum opted for the seasonal soup (chicken miso with edamame beans) and egg and cress sandwiches, Dad had a spicy chicken and mozzarella toastie, and our son had a cheese toastie. With a slice of bakewell tart and two pieces of carrot cake, plus drinks, the total came to £30.

Much of a wait? It’s a queuing system to order so that took about five minutes or so – not bad considering there were only two staff at the time, and one was efficiently making the teas and coffees. Following the lunchtime rush, there wasn’t a huge choice of sandwiches left, though hot food is also available.

How was the food? Excellent. The toasties were deliciously hot and melty, while the egg and cress sandwiches were well filled and made with soft, fresh wholemeal bread. The soup was really tasty and converted me to the idea of superfood edamame beans. The cakes were moist and luscious, and generouslysized.

Good for kids? There’s a good choice of healthy, snacky items for children, plus there’s a kiddie’s lunch bag offering the usual bits and bobs, plus juice. Highchairs are available.

Good for the rest of the family? We found it a bit too cramped and crowded to be truly relaxing though the staff couldn’t be faulted, with one lovely lady helping us to pull two small tables together. Apparently, the cafe used to be bigger but was reduced in size to make more room for the shop floor. I think it’s time to rethink that decision. There’s not much room for wheelchairs or pushchairs but a bonus point was having the (spotless) toilets close by.

Would you go back? Definitely, but probably earlier in the day.

Score: 3/5
