Frandy Fishery gets season off to a flyer

The new season got off to a cracking start at FRANDY

FISHERY this week with the best flies proving to be the humungus, Ally McCoist lure, hothead damsel, cat’s whisker and bloodworm,

writes Neil Anderson.

Top areas were on the south and north shore at Smithcleuc­hs and the Pow Burn and south shore.

Included in the many good catches were: Malcolm Millar and Stuart Marshall (Alloa), who kept 10 for 28lb 8oz and released 28; Matt Mitchell (Falkirk), three for 8lb, two released; Jim Donnelly (Tullibody), two for 5lb 12oz; Paul Freathy (Alloa), kept five fish weighing 12lb 8oz.

Colin Smith (Aberfeldy) took a brace for 4lb 8oz; John Bell (Airth) kept four weighing 10lb 8oz and released six, Andy McReary (Glenrothes), released 12; Chris, Jim and Craig Arnit (Kirkcaldy), caught and released eight.

Derek Pozzi (Glenrothes), caught and released four; Robert Gardiner (Stenhousem­uir) kept four for 9lb 12oz; Dave Moodie (Carnoustie), kept three for 9lb and released six; Bill Ramage (Alva), three weighing 8lb and released seven; Bill Dawson (Dollar) kept two weighing 6lb; Mark Paterson (Plean) two, 5lb and released nine and Danny Green (Kinneswood) released four.

At ORCHILL LOCH, the Goth FFC had a sunny day to kick off their season, catching 52 fish for 131lb with J Ryan taking the heaviest basket with four for 12lb 8oz and heaviest fish at 4lb 8oz.

Also doing well were Tony Ross (Bankfoot) with two for 8lb 8oz on an orange dancer; Joe Hunter (Tullibody) three, 10lb on a blob; William Williams (Sauchie) two for 11lb, the best 9lb on a black fritz; Ian Soutar (Methven) used a tadpole to take a brace for 8lb.

John Nicol (Crieff) caught one for 3lb on a yellow dancer, Allan Stirling (Auchterard­er), one for 3lb on an orange nymph; Gus Drummond (Bridge of Allan) had a couple for 5lb on a cat.

The LAKE OF MENTEITH is celebratin­g 50 years as a fishery and is having some memorabili­a commission­ed and will be sponsoring competitio­ns at the lake.

The lake opens a week on Saturday and they have done away with the maximum fly size rule and have held prices steady.

Strathmore Angling Improvemen­t Associatio­n season tickets are now available for the Isla and Dean at tackle shops for the brown trout season starting on Tuesday.

Adult tickets are now £25 for the season and OAPs and juniors are £12. Day tickets are now £6 and £3 respective­ly.

Canmore Angling Club season tickets are also now available, priced at £40 for adults and £25 for OAPs and juniors, covering Forfar Loch and Den Of Ogil Reservoir for brown trout and rainbow trout in Forfar Loch. This permit also allows year round access to pike fishing on Forfar Loch with dead bait or fly only.

Arbroath Angling Club season tickets are on sale for brown trout fishing on the River Lunan which starts on Tuesday. The ticket costs £33 for adults, £21 for OAPs and £16 for juniors.

Brechin Angling Club day permits are being sold for the Westwater (North Esk tributary). The club has two beats, Lundie and Clochie, which cost £10 a day, and Dalhousie beat which costs £20 a day until the end of June and £30 thereafter. Fishing on both for salmon and sea trout by fly or spinning only and catch and release until June 15.
