Immense history in Brechin manse

With only four owners over three centuries, Easterburn near Brechin is not a house that changes hands often. Jack McKeown takes a look at the handsome manse

Easterburn, in Menmuir near Brechin, is not a young house. Built as the final years of the 18th Century drew to a close, its south wing was added in 1826. The house was built as a manse, and as such retains much of its period character and features, including panelled doors and cornicings.

It was sold by the Church of Scotland in the 1950s and has had only three subsequent owners since then, with the property’s current occupants acquiring it in 2007.

The five-bedroom house is B listed and sits in four acres of land, including paddocks and a small wood.

On the ground floor there is an elegant drawing room with twin aspect windows and an open fire. At more than 23 feet long the dining room is big enough for all but the grandest of dinner parties.

Also on the ground floor is a guest bedroom with windows overlooking the front and side gardens and an en suite bathroom.

Those seeking a showcase master bedroom will like it. Spanning the entire width of the building, it has a walkway leading to a large dressing room with an en suite.

There are two more bedrooms on the upper floor along with two bathrooms.

West of the house is a walled garden with a lawn and central sundial.

A paved terrace with a pond and a fountain is next to the house and there is a tennis court, paddocks and a patch of woodland.
