Speeding conundrum

“Jack McKeown recently reported that car speedomete­rs show cars travelling faster than they are because car companies do not want to face legal action in the case of drivers caught speeding or involved in a fatal accident,” writes a Craigie regular.

“There are two reasons why I question that assertion. One is that, when entering villages with signs indicating approachin­g cars’ speeds, I always find that the signs are showing the same speed as my speedomete­r.

“The second is that I have adhered faithfully to speed limits ever since the authoritie­s put six points on my licence for two speeding offences. I travel at exactly the limit where appropriat­e and safe.

“I am then passed by almost everything in sight, especially on stretches such as that between Claypotts and the Monifieth turn-off on the Dundee – Arbroath dual carriagewa­y. I stick to the 40 mph limit, but hardly anybody else does.

“Every now and then, however, I find many fast drivers suddenly slow down and join my funeral procession. The reason? A speed camera or a police car ahead!

“If it is correct that my speedomete­r is reading high, why do other cars not continue to pass me in these circumstan­ces?” missing Boys’ Brigade Trophies.
