Wonder goal adds to Brechin momentum

Brechin City boss Darren Dods praised the attitude of his players after they defeated Stenhousemuir 1-0 at Glebe Park thanks to a Robert Thomson ‘wonder’ goal four minutes into the second half.

Although City remain bottom of League One they are level on points with Angus neighbours Forfar Athletic and just two points behind eighth-placed Cowdenbeath.

The Warriors, in seventh, are just three points ahead with four matches remaining.

It is clearly going to be a nail-biting finale to the season for all four teams involved in the relegation battle.

Dods reckons his team, who have now notched up five victories from their last six matches, have what it takes to beat the drop.

“If you’d said to us a month ago that we’d have won five out of our last six games we wouldn’t have believed it given the form we were showing at that time.

“But at the present time we’ve got great team spirit, we’ve got confidence and we’ve got momentum and we have to be sure we take those qualities into our final four matches.”

“The four games outstanding – two at home and two away – are clearly massive matches for the club. But two of those games are against Cowdenbeath and Forfar, two teams still involved in the relegation struggle, so we are acutely aware that our final destiny lies firmly in our own hands.”

The first half was evenly matched, with few chances for either side, but City made the vital breakthrough four minutes into the second thanks to a wonderful goal from Robert Thomson.

Liam Watt flighted a perfect free-kick into the Stenny box, which was headed back by Andy Jackson.

Thomson with his back to the goal, executed a stunning overhead kick which soared into the roof of the net.
