In a most striking manner His Majesty has once again shown his great sympathy with his people in their hour of trouble. King George has given £100,000 and that sum is to be disposed of in whatever manner the Government deem best. It’s a great sum, and demonstrat­es not only that King George is willing to set an example to his people in the matter of economy, but also in the matter of charity. Since the early days of the war, when five millions was collected, we have heard little of the need of charity in this war.

A Forfar boy had an exciting 20 minutes at Arbroath Cliffs late yesterday when he was stranded near the top of a 75-foot cliff. Ernest Patullo, aged 13, was stuck on the cliff face near the end of King’s Drive. He had gone to Arbroath with his father and a friend, Gordon Smith (14). After Mr Patullo had parked the car, the boys went for a walk. When they didn’t return Mr Patullo went to look for them. He then saw a crowd watching a boy stuck on the cliff and when he looked closer he saw it was Ernest.

Equal opportunit­ies officers at Dundee District Council are to examine the facilities for disabled drivers at petrol filling stations at the request of the equal opportunit­ies committee. Councillor Coutts said the problems facing the disabled driver had come to his attention during a television programme. Many petrol stations, he said, were very impersonal with self-service only systems which made life difficult for disabled drivers. “Disabled drivers face a lot of problems,” said Mr Coutts.

Vital funding has helped young whizzkids engineer further recognitio­n for a successful lunchtime and out-of-hours school club. angus Young Engineers is based in Forfar Academy and now has more than 120 pupils involved in the club, which was set up to offer them the opportunit­y to enhance their skills around science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s activities. Pupils can also work towards achieving CREST qualificat­ion — a creative science and technology award.
