A Fife road accident in which an eight-year-old boy died claimed a second victim yesterday.

A 36-year-old woman passed away in Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital following a collision between a car and a lorry on the outskirts of the town on Monday.

She succumbed to her injuries less than 24 hours after the collision on the northbound A92, between Kirkcaldy’s Redhouse Roundabout and the Bankhead Roundabout in Glenrothes.

The news came as further details emerged of the tragedy which involved a grey Ford Focus and a timber lorry.

A nine-year-old boy, who was a passenger the Focus, suffered what police described as serious injuries to his face.

It is understood that at least three of the car’s four occupants were from Poland and had been travelling through the region, and that they were not all members of the same family.

Yesterday the stretch of road fully reopened to motorists after being closed for several hours in the aftermath of Monday’s incident.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair, from Police Scotland’s road policing unit, said specialist officers were continuing their investigation and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“Tragically this collision has resulted in a second death and our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved,” she said.

“A full investigation to determine what happened is ongoing and I would reiterate our appeal for witnesses.

“If you saw this collision take place, or if you have information relevant to our inquiries then please contact police immediately.”

The crash, which was reported to emergency services shortly before 3pm on Monday, took place in lane one of the northbound carriageway, around half a mile beyond the Redhouse roundabout on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy.

At least five fire appliances were on the scene at the height of the emergency, with firefighters using cutting equipment to free the occupants of the cat.

The mangled wreckage of the car and the Iveco lorry also involved in the accident were removed from the scene for more detailed investigations, and the road was closed for more than seven hours in total as the emergency services conducted their inquiries.

Anyone with further information should contact Police Scotland on 101.
