Vets set out manifesto for animals
Britain’s vets have called on the next intake of MSPs to take action on animal health and welfare in a “Manifesto for Scotland 2016-2021” which they launched yesterday.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and its Scottish branch set out 20 policy recommendations for the next Scottish Government.
They include supporting vets and farmers to combat endemic livestock diseases, protecting the welfare of animals by requiring all animals to be stunned before slaughter and introducing measures to label meat as stunned or non-stunned to allow consumers to make an informed choice.
They also call for collaboration and integration of the veterinary and medical professions to promote the responsible use of antimicrobials and an increased budget for the Highlands and Islands Veterinary Services Scheme to support vet services in low income and hard to reach areas.
BVA Scottish branch president Grace Webster said the UK enjoyed some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world.
“We are also the only nation in the UK to be officially tuberculosis free,” she said.
“Partnership working between Government, vets and animal keepers has achieved much in Scotland and, we believe, can achieve more through our agri and aquaculture industries and hub or research expertise.
“Veterinary surgeons have a unique opportunity and responsibility to advocate animals’ best interests at individual, community and national levels – and we look forward to working with the next Government in Scotland.”
BVA president Sean Wensley added that vets were in a unique position to offer the next Government in Scotland evidence-based advice and recommendations for animal health and welfare policy.
“The forthcoming elections affect us all, and as a nation that prides itself on high and continuously improving animal welfare standards, we urge the incoming government to put animal health and welfare on their agenda and champion the concept of One Health in recognition of the inextricable links between animals, humans and our shared living environment.”
BVA’s manifesto will be sent to all candidates who are standing for election.
