West Port Bar & Kitchen, St Andrews

-

What is it? A welcoming haven for diners of all ages at the west end of St Andrews’ South Street.

First impressions? Set within a traditional stone building, the bistro’s interior is beautifully modern and on trend. After stepping through the glass front door, we were greeted by a friendly staff member behind the bar, who suggested that we take up the cosy sofas and tables downstairs, which got the thumbs up from my partner after he clapped eyes on the flat-screen TV.

What did you have? I went for the tuna melt ciabatta, £6, while my partner opted for the ham and cheddar melt ciabatta , £6. The little ones chose a portion of macaroni cheese each from the children’s menu at £5, which came with chips and beans. With drinks and two “super sides” of piri piri fries and Parmesan and rosemary fries, the total came to about £35.

Much of a wait? The food arrived at the table only 15 minutes after placing the order.

How was the food? Packed full of tuna mayonnaise and cheese, my toasted ciabatta was deliciously filling and went perfectly with the accompanying fresh side salad and crisp piri piri fries. My other half’s choice of ham and cheese melt wasn’t anything special but was polished off in no time nonetheless. And there was very little noise from the terrible two as they scoffed their stringy macaroni cheese, which my daughter declared “yummy!”. The stars of the show, however, were the rosemary and Parmesan fries, which were enjoyed by all – next time, I’ll definitely order two bowls!

Good for kids? The children received activity packs from the waiter with colour-in menus, which kept them occupied while they waited for their food.

Good for the rest of the family? With four different dining spaces to choose from, the West Port Bar & Kitchen is perfect for all occasions. It’s beer garden is also great during the summer.

Would you go back? Most definitely. It’s only a nine-minute walk from the famous golf course and 11 minutes from the castle, making it the perfect stop-off while on a day out in St Andrews.
