Gowfers put four past Port to ease relegation worries

-

Carnoustie’s 4-0 win at Tayport last night took them further away from the Super League drop zone – but the result plunged the Canniepairt side deep into relegation trouble.

The Fife outfit were two down after 11 minutes after goals from Jamie McCabe and Scott Gray, and player-manager John Ovenstone was sent off after only 29 minutes.

Stuart Gersok added a third for the Gowfers 11 minutes after the restart and Marc Scott made it four with 10 minutes to go.

Broughty Athletic also eased their relegation fears with a narrow win over St Andrews, who can feel aggrieved at coming away from Whitton Park emptyhanded.

Kevin Buchan scored the only goals of a hardfought contest early in the first half to leave Saints in the play-off spot.

Meanwhile, in the top-of-the-table Premier league clash at Riverside Stadium, Jeanfield Swifts edged out Lochee United 1-0.

After a goalless first half, Swifts player-boss Ross Gunnion got the all-important goal early in the second half to open up a five-point gap over the fourth-placed visitors, albeit they have a game in hand.

Kelty Hearts are through to the semifinal of the Conservatory Convertors Fife & Lothians Cup after a narrow win away to Sauchie last night.

Skipper Shaun Greig was Hearts’ matchwinner with the only goal of the game four minutes before halftime.

Calum Petrie’s firstminute goal earned Forfar West End a place in the fourth round of the DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup at the expense of hosts Blairgowrie.

In the North League, Glenrothes chalked up a sixth straight success by beating Lochore Welfare 2-0 at Central Park to stay on track for promotion. A goal in each half from John Martin gave the Glens the three points that take them up to third in the table.
