Scots couple lead the way in winning life-changing sums

-

Some of the UK’s biggest lottery winners include:

1. Colin and Chris Weir won more than £161 million in 2011 and donated £3.5m to the Yes Scotland campaign.

The couple also helped their favourite football team, Partick Thistle, get out of debt and became shareholders of the club.

2. The Bayford family won Britain’s second-biggest lottery jackpot of £148.6m in 2012.

Gillian Bayford was criticised last month after a café she owned in Arbroath was mysteriously closed down resulting in the loss of 21 jobs.

She was criticised further after she offered the sacked employees, who were on zero-hour contracts, a £100 gift voucher to stay quiet.

3. A Dundee firefighter won £1.9m in 2014 and chose to remain anonymous.

Given his wish to remain unknown, it is unsure whether or not he is still in his job at Broughty Ferry Fire Station.

4. In 2002, Michael Carroll won almost £10m at the age of 19.

He became known as the “lotto lout”, after apparently spending his winnings on alcohol, drugs and cars.

He applied for his old job as a binman after he had spent his fortune within 10 years.

5. Earlier this year, grandmother Susanne Hinte, from Worcester, claimed she had won £3m on a faded ticket that went through the washing machine.

However, Camelot later confirmed the real winner came forward.
