Perth service relocates as demand set to rise

Perth foodbank has moved to new premises ahead of an anticipated increase in demand.

Organisers fear that the introduction of Universal Credits, which replace a number of benefits, will spark a surge of people seeking help.

The foodbank was formed in 2013 and for the last two years has operated from premises in Back Wynd.

The new building, on Cutlog Vennel, allows organisers to have all their supplies in one space, as well as being more conveniently located in the city centre.

Organisers also plan to start a café, where those in need can seek advice.

Perth foodbank chairman Michael Archibald, pictured right, said: “I thought we would be closed by now – I hoped we’d be closed by now.

“I didn’t want to be working at this for more than a few months but we are now in our third year and I don’t think the problem is going away in the near future.

“With Universal Credits reaching Perth in the near future, we expect a rise in the usage of our foodbank. In other places there’s been a huge increase when it happened. People get paid once and it doesn’t last the month.”

He said the new location had a number of advantages.

“Firstly all our stock is in one place – previously we were going to four different locations and spending most of our time driving about and shifting stuff,” he said.

“Secondly it’s only about 50 yards from the Mill Street bus stops. Additionally, people are coming up the vennel and are not being seen by anyone – people in Perth tend to be very embarrassed about going to a foodbank, despite the fact that 85% are only coming the once.

“Also we now have a place where they can sit and have a chat with people.”

Mr Archibald also expressed his thanks to those who donate to the scheme.

“The people in Perthshire are among the most generous people in the country – our collection at Crieff Road Tesco is the second biggest made in the whole of Great Britain.

“It’s marvellous the generosity of the people – we’ve never had a lack of food.”
