‘It doesn’t get better than this’, admits Wighton
WINNER: Dark Blues’ goal hero delighted to see tables turned in Dens derby
Dundee derby hero Craig Wighton admitted “it doesn’t get any better than this”.
The 18-year-old scored the injury time goal that clinched a famous win for the Dark Blues.
As a local boy and a Dundee fan, Wighton didn’t need to be told how important last night’s match was to the club’s supporters.
Nor does he need to be told what the reaction to the result, and his part in it, will be in the city.
“It doesn’t get better than this as a Dundee fan,” he said.
“We knew before the game what the circumstances surrounding it were but the most important thing for us was getting the three points and we’re delighted to do that.
“It’s probably the best atmosphere in a good while at Dens Park and you could see what it meant to the fans but the three points is the main thing and ending the season undefeated against them, which hasn’t happened in a while.
“All my family are massive Dundee fans and were at the game.
“It’s brilliant to go undefeated against them all season. A lot of people have said we don’t turn up in big games or bottled opportunities and the Rangers Scottish Cup defeat was very frustrating but we’ve had a couple of good results against Celtic and we’re unbeaten against United so it shows we can produce when it matters.”
The Scotland youth international added: “I’m sure my goal will be talked about but for me it’s just another goal to add to the ones I’ve got for Dundee.
“People will get carried away but I’m still young and haven’t played many games so the most important thing for me is to kick on and try and score a few more before the end of the season.
“I know what it’s going to be like over the next few weeks. You could see what it meant to the fans at the end.
“It was obviously a massive goal to score.”
Wight on, who was on trial with United as a youngster, felt this result was some payback for years of derby hurt.
“It’s not nice to see anybody get relegated but over the last 10 years Dundee have been through a lot,” he said.
“It’s been hard.
“The fans have stuck by the club in some difficult times.
“We’ve had a lot of stick off United fans so the tables have turned a wee bit.
“Growing up as a Dundee fan there were a lot of poor derby results. They didn’t really go our way.
“This season they’ve been brilliant. To go undefeated and then win this one in the last minute.
“Obviously coming through the youths that was something I wanted to do.”
