Debut goal as Renton makes up for lost time

-

Striker Kris Renton opened his account for the Blue Brazil on his league debut as Cowden beat Edinburgh City.

The 26-year-old hitman missed the opening two League Two fixtures through suspension, hanging over from last season with East Super League side Newtongrange Star.

Renton opened the scoring in 33 minutes when he chased a long Shaun Rutherford ball to head past Calum Antell.

He also had several shots saved by the keeper before Lewis Moore clinched the points three minutes from time after Gary Glen hit the post.

Renton said: “It was a bit frustrating having to sit out the first two games and I could hardly wait to get out there.

“It was a difficult game as City are a hard working lot but when Shaun put the pass through I knew if I chased hard I could make life difficult for the keeper and it was brilliant to see the ball roll over the line.

“It is just the start though and we have to look to win our next two games – away to Clyde and Montrose – to get our challenge fully up and running.”

Cowden boss Liam Fox was happy with his first threepoint haul, saying: “In the first period we created a lot of good chances but were unable to get more than one ahead.

“However, we kept working hard and got the second goal to make the points safe.”

The manager praised players at opposite ends of the park – striker Renton and goalkeeper Dave McGurn.

Fox went on: “It was brilliant that Kris got his first league goal on his debut and I am sure there are many more to come.

“He has been a heavy scorer in the junior ranks and, while this is a step up for him, he has shown in the pre-season games and the Betfred Cup that he has what it takes.

“Dave McGurn played his part well. While he did not have a lot to do he did make three or four very good saves at key times and that was why I brought him here because he is a top-class keeper.”
