Make sure your health wins top marks when you go to university

- SAMANTHA EVANS

If you’re heading off to university soon you’ll be looking forward to a new exciting phase in your life, so the last thing you want to worry about is the dreaded freshers’ flu.

Luckily the two main causes of the lurgy are easily preventable – a bad diet and lack of exercise.

Robin Aspinall, managing director of first aid and healthcare specialists NatraSan, offers his top tips on staying in tip top health.

“With a student budget it can be easy to opt for cheap, unhealthy options at the supermarket. But it’s important to try to maintain a healthy, varied diet to help aid concentration during long lectures and boost brain cells for end-of-term tests.”

Beans on wholemeal toast, a great student staple, is a cheap source of fibre and protein. Oily fish like mackerel and sardines, tomatoes, broccoli, and nuts boost brainpower, or wow your friends with a caprese salad – tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.

Excessive alcohol consumption causes dehydration so it is important to drink lots of liquids. Water is the healthiest option and homemade smoothies are a nutritious way to hydrate and hit your five a day.

Remembering to stay active is very important. Joining a gym or sports team is a fun and social way to stay fit. If you’re not very athletic, going for a run or a walk is good for your body, as well as a nice way to explore the town.

Freshers’ week is an exciting time of your life. Make the most of it, and stay healthy so that you can enjoy your time at university to the max.
