A 37-year-old woman has died after her car struck a lorry on the A90 near Dundee on Wednesday night.

It is understood fire crews used cutting gear to free her from her vehicle but she could not be saved.

The incident occurred at a layby near Inchture on the westbound carriageway.

Emergency services, including a trauma team, were called to the scene of the collision at around 9.45pm.

The victim’s Vauxhall Corsa was crushed when it hit the HGV. The woman is thought to have been the only person in the car. The lorry driver was uninjured.

Throughout the recovery operation the two westbound lanes were fully closed, with police and BEAR Scotland staff blocking entry slipways as far back as the Swallow roundabout in Dundee.

One witness, who was returning home to Dundee when the incident took place, described the scene.

The woman said: “I could see the car in the back of the lorry. It had gone under the back of it. The whole of the front of the car was crushed. There must have been about three fire engines and they were trying to help whoever was in the car.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland’s Tayside Division said: “We can confirm that a 37-year-old female died when her car collided with a lorry on the A90 near Inchture, Perthshire.

“The woman was driving a silver Vauxhall Corsa on the westbound carriageway when the collision occurred.

“Police are appealing for anybody who may have seen this vehicle before the accident to contact them on 101.”

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “Three appliances from the Blackness Road and Macalpine Road stations and a heavy rescue unit attended.

“Hydraulic airbags and hydraulic cutting equipment were used to remove one person from the car.”

The westbound carriageway remained shut until 6.30am yesterday.

Douglas Pover, a councillor for the Carse of Gowrie area, said: “I’m really shocked to hear this. My thoughts go out to the woman’s family and friends.”

A similar incident occurred just three months ago when a car carrying a man and young girl collided with the rear of a stationary lorry on the A90 north of Dundee.

Both survived but suffered lifethreatening injuries in the crash.
