A schoolboy was rushed to hospital yesterday after being hit by a bus in Perth.

Fellow pupils witnessed the sickening collision, which occurred on Newhouse Road at around 8am. Eye-witnesses said police and ambulance crews descended on the scene just moments after the accident.

Traffic was also diverted as paramedics initially tended to the stricken child at the scene of the incident.

The youngster, aged 12, was then transferred to hospital for further treatment.

A police spokeswoman said: “We attended at Newhouse Road, Perth, after reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus and a pedestrian.”

Schoolchildren looked on in helpless horror as a young boy was hit by a bus during morning rush hour.

The 12-year-old was taken to hospital following the incident on Perth’s Newhouse Road.

The accident took place at around 8am, when the busy thoroughfare was full of pedestrians and cars making their way to work or school.

One eyewitness said there had been a crowd of children waiting at one of the bus stops near the site of the incident, between Struan Road and Tweedsmuir Road, who would have seen the incident.

She said: “I looked out the window and the boy was already lying in the road, but there were children waiting on the school bus and they would have seen it all.”

Another local resident, Charlene White, added: “The bus was just past the stop so it could only have just happened.

“The police and ambulance got here pretty rapidly.

“The whole road was in a state of upheaval for about half an hour.

“It’s a busy area and at that time in the morning there are a lot of kids on their way to school.

“The police and Stagecoach handled it really well.

“They got all the passengers off and onto another bus.”

Traffic was diverted while paramedics attended to the boy.

One motorist said: “I was coming up the hill from Tesco.

“The traffic was moving fine as I came up the hill but the crash was at the bus stop just after the lights.

“I saw the police and ambulance but as there was a bus there to but could not see much else. “I had to turn left at the lights.” A spokeswoman for Stagecoach East Scotland said: “One of our vehicles was involved in an incident on Newhouse Road, Perth this morning involving a school pupil – we understand the person involved was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution and our first thoughts are for their well-being.

“Safety is our priority and we’re assisting the police with their inquiries into the incident.”
