Flyers’ double leaves Stars rooted to bottom of table

-

Fife Flyers last night completed a weekend win double over arch rivals Dundee Stars with a 7-4 road victory.

The Kirkcaldy club, who emerged with a 3-2 win at Kirkcaldy against Stars on Saturday, responded after a verbal blast from coach Todd Dutiaume.

The double defeat leaves the Tayside team rooted to the bottom of the 10-strong table.

It started well for Dundee when defenceman Kevin Hart fired them ahead on the power play after six minutes.

Fife responded eight minutes later when Philippe Paquet levelled, and Seb Thinel fired them ahead just over a minute after that.

Dundee scored two unanswered goals to move ahead for a second time, Mikael Lidhammar netting after 28 minutes and Matt White securing their third two minutes later.

Fife then scored three straight goals. Ryan Dingel was on target after 31 minutes followed by a strike from Chase Schaber seven minutes later, and Mathew Sisca popped in number five only 4:21 into the third period.

Dundee hit back a minute later through Vinny Scarsella to make it 5-4, but Kyle Haines and Justin Fox ended the contest with two goals in the final two minutes.

Flyer’s narrow win on Saturday had snapped a confidence-sapping three-game losing streak.

Brett Switzer broke the deadlock with only 18 seconds left of the opening session with a power-play strike, Felix Antoine Poulin and Vinny Scarsella assisting.

It took until the third session for the home side to score. Ryan Dingle opened their account unassisted after 49 minutes and Justin Fox fired the home side ahead less than a minute later. Fox was back in the spotlight five minutes after that with his second and Fife’s third, with Dingle setting-up the chance.

Matt White gave Stars some hope of salvaging something from the game with a goal inside the final two minutes, Kevin Hart assisting, but Dundee could not find another to level.

Fife Flyers’ bosses thanked fans who helped raise £10,122 for Breast Cancer Care Scotland at Saturday’s game from an in-ice, post-game jersey auction and a raffle.

Meanwhile, injury-hit Dundee Tigers last night claimed a 3-3 draw at Kirkcaldy Kestrels, the reigning Scottish National League champions.

The first period was blanked but Kestrels went 2-0 ahead at the second break thanks to goals from Robin Floyd after 29 minutes and Allan Anderson nine minutes later.

Tigers responded with goals from Andy Henderson after 41:50 and Paul Guilcher with less than six minutes left.

Floyd netted his second and Kestrels’ third with only 45 seconds left and the home side must have felt they had the game won, but Grant Reekie silenced Kirkcaldy fans with the game-tying strike with 26 seconds remaining.
