Dundee won’t do a United, says hero McGowan

Dundee have shown their desire not to follow city neighbours Dundee United through the Premiership trapdoor, according to Saturday’s goalscoring hero Paul McGowan.

Once their local rivals hit rock bottom of the table last season they weren’t able to climb off it, with the Dark Blues famously putting the tin lid on the Tangerines’ relegation.

But McGowan wants to make sure that the Dens Park side follow up their victory against Hamilton Accies with a run of results that makes their stay in 12th place a far shorter one.

He said: “We have given ourselves a platform now and we need to take that into the next game.”

“No player wants to be relegated. For a big club like Dundee it would be a real shame because of the talent we have in that dressing room.

“We know it can happen because we saw it happen to Dundee United. Everyone said they were too good to go down and they would get out of it.

“But when you’re down there and you’re not picking up any points and the other teams are picking them up and getting away from you it becomes harder to claw the gap back.

“We saw the players that United had in their team and they kept saying they would get out of it but the gap just got bigger and bigger.

“We ended up putting them down. It can happen. No one is too good to go down. We just hope we don’t rest on this and we push on to next week.”
